Global Game Jam is the world’s largest game developer event, with an anticipated 25,000 participants creating 4,500 games at 524 sites in 78 different countries! This year, The Branch Coworking is hosting the South Bend site for the event.
The event starts with a keynote presentation, which helps set the context for the weekend, including why games are important, why community is important, and some background on Global Game Jam.
Over 48 hours, we will have at least four games created and released under the Creative Commons license Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike. All the games created around the globe are unified with a central theme. Two years ago, the theme was the sound of a beating heart. Last year, the theme was a quote: “We see the world not as it is, but as we are.” This year’s theme? It was a question: “What do we do now?” That theme has spawned game ideas ranging from those that include planets, people who eat cake and grow fat, and strange ways to die.
All GGJ15 games will be uploaded to the game site on Sunday afternoon.
This is the third year that the Michiana region is participating in Global Game Jam. Participation has grown from about 12 participants in the first year to two sites and more than 60 participants in 2015. Michiana’s 2015 participation includes GGJ site in South Bend and one at Goshen College.
At The Branch, we believe strongly in the value of community, and sponsoring and hosting events such as Global Game Jam are our way of giving back. That said, we could not have events like this in South Bend without the help of our other sponsors of Global Game Jam: ExakTime, Bluefin Software, South Bend Brew Werks, and Prospero’s Pen.
